Augsburg Announces Recruiting Class

MINNEAPOLIS — The Augsburg College wrestling team will welcome an incoming first-year and transfer class that has five state championships, 23 state tournament placings and 45 state tournament qualifications to its credit among the 25 recruits, head coach Mark Matzek has announced.

The incoming class will aim to keep the Augsburg program in its familiar role among the elite teams in small-college wrestling. Augsburg has finished among the top 10 teams at the NCAA Division III National Championships every year since 1988 — a streak of 26 straight years. Augsburg is coming off a 10th-place finish in the 2013 tournament.

“The coaching staff and I are very excited about our incoming recruiting class. It is one of our largest and most accomplished ever with five state championships, 23 state placements, and 45 state qualifications during their high school careers. Along with being great wrestlers, these young men have also done exceptionally well in the classroom, highlighted by two National High School Coaches Association Scholar All-Americans,” said Matzek, entering his sixth season as Augsburg’s head coach in 2013-14.

“These individuals will be a great addition to our current wrestlers in the room which includes a two-time national champion, four returning All-Americans, and eight returning national qualifiers,” Matzek added. “We look forward to continuing the strong tradition of Augsburg wrestling, as we work toward adding to our record 11 NCAA Division III wrestling national championships.”

Augsburg opens its 2013-14 campaign on Nov. 23 with the annual Auggie-Brute Open at Si Melby Hall.
