Southwest Minnesota State places 11 at Jimmie Open

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Justin Reinsma (133), Travis Peralta (184) and Micah Larson (197) all earned first-place at their respective weights to lead Southwest Minnesota State to 11 place-winners at the Jimmie Open hosted by Jamestown College on Saturday. In all, SMSU recorded 21 pins and 47 wins in 72 total bouts.

Taylor Curtis finished with a sixth-place finish at 125 pounds by going 1-3 on the day. Curtis won his opening match over Cade Coles by an 8-7 decision but dropped the next three.

Justin Reinsma claimed the 133 pound title by going 4-0 with victories over Adam Sutlief (Ridgewater CC), Jacob Knudsvig (Minot State), Zach Matthys (Itasca CC), and Joshua Douglas (Minot State). Reinsma opened with a 12-3 major decision over Sutlief and followed with a win by fall at 3:54 versus Knudsvig. A 7-3 decision in the semifinals advanced him to the first-place bout where he claimed a 6-4 sudden victory for his first open title of the season. Justin Stevens was also in action in the bracket – he finished 0-2.

The 141 pound bracket was loaded with three Mustangs – Ethan Hildebrandt, Trent Butcher and Cody Reed. Hildebrandt reached the title match by winning three straight, including a win by fall at 1:04 over Jonah Moore (Unattached). Hildebrandt fell 4-0 to Mitch Friedman (Unattached) in the title bout to finish the day with a 3-1 record and a second-place finish. Butcher and Reed also won by fall in the first round by winning by fall at 4:22 over Ed Watts (Itasca CC), and 0:52 over Flynn Stormer (Minot State), respectively. Reed and Butcher would both suffer losses in the next round – Butcher by an 11-2 major decision, and Reed by a medical forfeit at 1:21. Butcher would make his way to the third-place bout by winning four straight, including three coming via pin. Butcher defeated Zachary Cummings (Minot State) 8-4 in the third-place bout to take the third-place finish. At the end of the day, Butcher went 5-1 with four pins.

At 157 pounds, Codie Lane was in action for the Mustangs as he advanced to the quarterfinal bout with two wins before falling 12-8 to Ricards Avakovs (Minot State) in the semifinal round. The loss pitted Lane in the loser’s bracket where he reeled off two straight victories to claim a third-place finish – a fall at 5:44 over Matt Meyer (Ridgewater CC), and 11-10 decision over Jevon Schnaubert (Jamestown). Lane went 4-1 on the day.

Kyle Begin took fourth-place at 165 pounds by going 2-2. Begin received a bye in the opening round and followed with a quick pin at 1:24 of Jason Armitage (Dickinson State). Begin was pinned at 4:48 by Pat Nord (Unattached) in the semis, but responded with a pin of his own at 1:40 over Trevour Chavez (Unattached) to advance him to the third-place bout. It was there that Begin fell short of third-place by getting pinned at 5:29 by Brock Krumm (U-Mary).

Vaughn Monreal-Berner took his opening round bout at 174 pounds 8-4 over James Bridges (Unattached), but suffered a 21-6 technical fall that sent him to face Jacob Ludovissie (Itasca CC) in the loser’s bracket where he took a 3-2 decision. Monreal-Berner was pinned at 4:38 by Jaykob Miller (Jamestown) to eliminate him from the tournament.

The 184 pound bracket was much like the 141 pound bracket as three Mustangs were active – Andrew Rodas, William Dean, Travis Peralta. This time SMSU got a champion and once again put multiple wrestlers on the podium as Peralta took the crown by going 3-0, Rodas took third and Dean earned a sixth-place result. Peralta received an opening round bye and advanced to pin U-Mary’s Patrick Pontarellie. In the semifinal match, Peralta defeated Dean 9-4. Peralta edged Matthew Lewellen (MSU-Moorhead) 7-6 to take first-place and earn his first tournament title of the season. Dean opened things up with a pin of Justin Berg (Minot State) at 2:44 and a 25-10 technical fall of Jorge Munoz-Pederson (Unattached) before falling to Peralta in the semis. Dean would drop his next two matches to finish 2-3 on the day – good for a sixth-place finish. Andrew Rodas would join teammates Dean and Peralta on the podium as he went 4-1 to take third. Rodas pinned Shawn Johnson (Ridgewater CC) at 2:37 and used a 6-5 decision over Matt Fetterley (Minot State) to give SMSU three semifinalists in the bracket. Rodas fell 8-5 to Lewellen, but rebounded with a pin and a 16-8 major decision to end the day.

Micah Larson became the third champion for SMSU on the day when he took the 197 pound bracket by going a perfect 4-0. Larson pinned Jacob Tilley (Unattached) at 5:51 and Skyler Carroll (Dickenson State) at 5:45 to advance to the semifinal round – where he defeated Tyler Schlosser by a 9-1 major decision. Larson closed out his perfect performance with a 9-4 decision of Tommy Petersen (Unattached).

Cole Wilson exploded out of the gates at 285 with back-to-back pins. Wilson pinned Jordan Stevens (Ridgewater) at 1:41, before pinning Justin Peper (Itasca) at 0:53. Wilson would get hurt in the semifinal match and was scratched from competition for the rest of the day.
