Opening Ceremony RTW Fall 2019

Instead of doing a runway show, Opening Ceremony, which hosted a party on Sunday night to fete the Chinese New Year, presented its fall collection at one-on-one appointments at the brand’s showroom.

“This season we decided to shoot the looks on unique personalities, friends from different fields who belong to our community and who represent the different parts of Asia,” explained Opening Ceremony co-creative director Humberto Leon. For example, fashion designer Anna Sui, playwright David Henry Hwang, food writer Priya Krishna, as well as actors Waris Ahluwalia and Greta Lee, were among those portrayed in the pictures.

Fashion-wise, Leon said he was inspired by the signature bold looks and cheerful and positive energy of two of his style icons, Eighties’ Asian pop stars Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui.

Touching different notes, the mood ranged from sweet and pop, as in the tiny hearts printed on a puffer jacket; to glamorous, with separates covered with a cascade of sequins in pastel colors; to mannish and sartorial with softly constructed suits worked in fluid fabrics with a silk effect.

Putting the focus on versatility, a range of outerwear pieces were reversible, such as a black belted coat with a cozy teddy bear on the other side. In addition, while off-the-shoulder ribbed knits embellished with marabou feathers was all Nineties’ exuberance, an argyle sweater in neon colors was a response to Leon’s mother diktat: “Always clash colors.” And we know…mothers must be listened to!
