Rennes release statement as match against Tottenham Hotspur will not be played

UEFA have today released a statement regarding the Conference League group stage match between Rennes and Tottenham Hotspur, after the fixture could not be played on Thursday night when the Premier League side announced its intention not to play following a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad.

The governing body has now confirmed that the match will not be played at a later date, despite efforts between UEFA and the two clubs to find a solution. As a result, the matter will be taken to its disciplinary commission.

Rennes have released a statement taking note of the decision. The club had also stated on Thursday night that the London side had shown a lack of “fair play” in the way it acted. Spurs had initially told their opponents the game would go ahead before going back on their decision in the evening, after Rennes had touched down in London.

L’Équipe report that the Premier League side could lose the match by forfeit, with Rennes – who are already guaranteed first place in the group – being awarded the 3-0 win. As brought up by Rennes in their initial statement, the UEFA regulation states that this is the sanction when a club pulls out of a match due to Covid-19 outbreaks.
