PLAYER RATINGS | Monaco 2-0 Lyon, Wissam Ben Yedder first-half masterclass enough for hosts

Ligue 1 21/22 , Round 23 – 5/2/22

MONACO – 2 (Disasi 2, Ben Yedder 27)

Alexander Nübel, 5

Ruben Aguilar, 6

Axel Disasi, 8 – Superb. He lead his team in defensive actions, with a huge 20, as he handled Dembele with ease throughout while defending with authority and aggression.

Guillermo Maripán, 6

Caio Henrique, 5

Aurélien Tchouaméni, 7

Jean Lucas, 6

Gelson Martins, 5

Sofiane Diop, 7 – Worked wonderfully in synch with Ben Yedder especially in the first half as a slippery and waspish presence dropping between the lines and was involved in both goals, cleverly finding Ben Yedder who crossed for the opener before a deft through ball invited the same player to chip a second.

Wissam Ben Yedder, 8 – Faded after half time as Lyon pressed but ran the game in the first half, rarely has he shown such vision and control in a Monaco shirt. His sublime first touch and dinked cross set up Lucas’ opener and a clipped finish over Lopes made it 2-0.

Kevin Volland, 6

Others: Vanderson 5, Fofana 5, Akilouche 5, Matazo 5.

LYON – 0

Anthony Lopes, 6

Jérôme Boateng, 5

Léo Dubois, 4

Castello Lukeba, 6

Emerson Palmieri, 5

Maxence Caqueret, 5 – A strange display from Caqueret overall. He led his team in shot-creating actions and blocks and interceptions, while showing his silky midfield verve at times, but he was also frustratingly wasteful and often pickpocketed in dangerous areas.

Tanguy Ndombele, 6 – Came on at half time for Mendes and isn’t far off a seven here as the balanced shifted markedly with his introduction in the second period. He provided much more drive and intensity than Tottenham fans will be used to and there were flashes of the domineering style and progression of play that made him such a hit first time round.

Romain Faivre, 4 – Came on at half time for Gusto with his side 2-0 down and, although OL were much improved after the break, he struggled to imposed himself on the game despite popping up in a variety of positions. Playing in a better team was expected to focus his talents but this was a akin to some of his absent Brest displays. Still very early days, however.

Rayan Cherki, 5 – Came on at half time for Henrique.

Lucas Paquetá, 4

Moussa Dembélé, 3 – Isolated for long periods, even as Lyon attacked in the second half, as the game seemed to happen around him. Struggled against Disasi to little success and couldn’t manufacture much, if any, space to threaten the Monaco goal.

Others: Henrique 4, Malo Gusto 5, Thiago Mendes 4, Keita 5, Barcola 5.
