Lionel Messi named Ligue 1 player of the month for September

Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi has been named Ligue 1 player of the month for September by the players’ union, having taken 58% of the vote. He beat out Lorient’s Dango Ouattara – 31% – and Lille striker Jonathan David, with the league’s joint top scorer getting 12% of votes cast.

The Argentine continued his return to top form this season by notching three assists and a goal in the league last month, including the winning goal in the away win against Lyon. Overall, he has eight goals and eight assists in 14 appearances in all competitions this season, having ostensibly settled in after a difficult first year and is excelling as he pulls the strings behind Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.

Messi becomes the second PSG player to win the award this campaign, with his Brazilian teammate having been named August’s best player after a scintillating start to the season of his own. The Argentine had also been among the nominees for the first month of the campaign.
