Veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer visited the Jets on Thursday, sources confirmed to the Daily News.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first to report Hoyer’s visit.
Hoyer could serve as a good backup to the incoming rookie quarterback from the 2021 NFL Draft class and all signs point to it being BYU’s Zach Wilson.
Hoyer, 35, has experience mentoring young quarterbacks. He spent time with former first rounder Johnny Manziel when the pair played for the Cleveland Browns in 2014. His 12 years of NFL experience can help develop a young quarterback.
Hoyer is also familiar with the Jets’ offensive coordinator Mike LeFleur’s scheme.
Hoyer played under San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan in 2017, where he went 0-6 as a starter and completed 58% of his throws for 1,245 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. LeFleur was the wide receivers coach and passing game specialist for the 49ers.
In 2014, Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for the Browns and Hoyer was the signal caller. He went 7-6 as a starter and completed 55.3% of his passes for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 13 starts. LeFleur was an offensive coaching intern that season.
Last season, Hoyer played for the New England Patriots and made one start after Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19. He threw for 130 yards and one interception against the Kansas City Chiefs before being benched for Jarrett Stidham.
After Gang Green dealt away Sam Darnold earlier this week, the only two QBs on the roster are James Morgan and Mike White.
Hoyer’s career numbers are 16-23 as a starter with 10,404 passing yards with 52 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.
The Jets signed interior offensive lineman Corey Levin on Thursday.
The 6-4, 307-pound lineman was selected in the sixth-round by the Tennessee Titans in the 2017 NFL Draft. He started one game in 2018 and was released in 2019. Levin was on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad in 2019, before the Chicago Bears signed him mid-season. The Bears cut him before the 2020 season and the Patriots signed him to their practice squad before releasing him shortly after.
Levin only has 140 career snaps, all for the Titans in 2018.
The Jets have re-signed safety Bennett Jackson, the team announced Thursday. The 6-0, 192-pound safety out of New Jersey played four games as a special teamer in 2020 before he was placed on injured reserve in December with a hamstring injury. He’s spent time on the Jets’ practice squad in 2019 and 2020. He was originally drafted by the Giants in the sixth round in 2014.
