As noted, many took the closing angle involving The Undertaker at last night’s WrestleMania 33 pay-per-view as a sign that “The Dead Man” is finally done competing in actual matches at “The Show of Shows” each year.
The Undertaker initially strung together an iconic 21-0 record in 21 matches at WrestleMania until he would lose for the first time ever in what was received by the fans as one of the most shocking and unexpected / unfathomable moments in the history of “The Showcase of the Immortals” when he lost to Brock Lesnar seemingly out of nowhere during their match at WrestleMania 30 back in 2014.
From there, The Undertaker would bounce back with back-to-back WrestleMania victories over Bray Wyatt (WrestleMania 31) and Shane McMahon (WrestleMania 32), which improved his career record at WrestleMania to 23-1, leading into last night’s showdown with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33.
After losing the match, as seen in the report we put up about his post-match segment in the ring, going to 23-2 overall at WrestleMania events, The Undertaker seemingly bid farewell to the record-setting amount of 75,245 members of the WWE Universe in attendance inside the Orlando Citrus Bowl / Camping World Stadium on Sunday night.
Despite that fact, however, many have been cautious to use the word “retirement” when describing the scene that unfolded, which saw ‘Taker remove his iconic coat, hat, gloves and wrist tape, leaving all four items in the middle of the ring as he exited the arena, only stopping briefly to acknowledge his family and raise his fist high in the sky right before going to the backstage area. The general consensus was that he did essentially the same thing after a win over Wyatt at last year’s WrestleMania 32 pay-per-view in Dallas, Texas, and not only returned at WrestleMania 33 this year, but also made some rare appearances on WWE television and pay-per-views in between.
Because this year saw “The Phenom” lose his second ever match at WrestleMania to Roman Reigns, with the same symbolic style of thanking the fans before heading to the back, some are expecting that last night may have been the final WrestleMania match that The Undertaker ever competes in. To fuel the rumors and speculation even further, a photo was captured that showed the same aforementioned four items still laying in the center of the ring as the 75,245 members of the WWE Universe were completely out of the building, and the cleaning crew was finishing their evening’s work.
