Jacks give back with Project Joy

With finals complete and their next competition a little over a week away, the South Dakota State wrestling team stepped away from the mat to provide a Christmas for a local family this holiday season through Project Joy.

“It is great to give back to the community,” head coach Chris Bono said. “I am proud of my team for doing such a wonderful job providing a Christmas to a family all on their own.”

Assistant Athletics Director for Academics, Jennie Sell worked with sophomore 125-pounder Ben Gillette to get the project going.

“Jennie brought Project Joy up at a Student-Athlete Advisory Committe (SAAC) meeting,” Gillette said. “We did it last year, too and had such a good time with it, that I knew the guys would want to do it again.”

Project Joy is a charitable, non-profit organization, dedicated to providing children and families living in Brookings County, who are in need, an opportunity to receive holiday gifts through the generous donations of individuals, business and organizations. With the overall goal of bringing joy to area children and families in need.

“It means a lot to us as a team to provide Christmas for a family and see the looks on the kids’ faces,” Gillette added.
