Joseph Leads Dragon Wrestlers at Grand Canyon Duals
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Junior Michael Joseph went 3-1 at 174 pounds to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team at the Grand Canyon Duals on Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz. MSUM finished 1-3 on the day against stout competition.
The Dragons (3-4 duals) beat Simon Fraser, 33-8, in their second match of the day but fell to No. 16-ranked Colorado Mesa, 28-12, California Baptist, 32-12 and Division I school Grand Canyon, 41-0.
In its opening match, MSUM got off to a good start as freshman Blake Bosch pinned Erick Vargas at 125 points in just 1:05 to give the Dragons an early 6-0 lead. Colorado Mesa won the five matches, however, to build a 16-6 advantage.
The Dragons battled back to within 16-12 with two wins. Joseph topped Dylan Granard at 174 pounds by a 5-1 score to cut the gap to 16-9, and senior Matt Lewellen earned a hard-fought 7-5 win over Scott Verner at 184 pounds to bring MSUM within four with two matches left.
CMU finished off the match with two pins, however, to complete a 28-12 win.
MSUM came back strong against Simon Fraser, winning eight of the 10 matches, including forfeit wins at 149 and 285. Freshman Shane Novak got the Dragons on the board at 133 with a pin of Sukhan Chahal at 2:16, giving them a 6-4 lead.
Connor MacGregor adde to the lead with a 12-6 win at 141, and with a forfeit win at 149, the Dragons held a 15-3 lead. Redshirt freshman Dan Murakami earned a 7-1 win at 157 pounds to make it 18-3 in favor of MSUM.
After losing at 165, Joseph battled to a tough 4-3 win over Simon Fraser’s Reid Watkins at 174 pounds. Lewellen (184 pounds) and freshman Tyler Schlosser (197) each won by decision to put the match well out of reach at 27-8. The Dragons won by forfeit at 285 to seal a 33-8 win.
In the loss to California Baptist, MSUM fell behind 28-0 after six matches – losing two matches by pin and another by technical fall. Joseph got the Dragons on the board with a 7-2 win over CBU’s Anthony Ballinger at 174. Schlosser picked up a 7-5 win at 197 pounds over Kenneth Tribble, and the ragons won by forfeit at 285 to make the final score of the dual 32-12.
Grand Canyon was boosted by three pins in its win over MSUM.
The Dragons are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 11 when they compete at Northern State. The match, which is MSUM’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener, begins at 6 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D.
