Augustana has strong showing at DWU Open

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Augustana College wrestling team competed at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday and had eight wrestlers win titles.

Colin Ayers (141 pounds, unattached), Shawn Hatlestad (157 pounds, unattached), Bradyn Neises (165 pounds, unattached), Tim Weber (165 pounds), Aero Amo (184 pounds, unattached), Jayd Docken (197 pounds, unattached), Michael Lowman (285 pounds, unattached).

Hatlestad, competing unattached, began the day with a first-round bye before he earned his first victory with a pin at the 1:41 mark over Jamil Jones of Bethany. Hatlestad followed by going 3-0 win before a 4-1 decision over Grant Henderson of Grand View College, giving Hatlestad the 157-pound title.

Amo, competing unattached, started the day getting three technical falls to place him the semifinal match. Amo went up against Rulin Pederson of Morningside College in a 3-2 decision, pushing him to the championship match. Amo took the 184-pound title over Concordia-Moorhead’s Sebastian Gardner with a pin at 0:32 in the first period.

In the 197-pound weight class, Docken (competing unattached) started his day off with a first-round bye, followed by a 10-3 decision over John Devito of U-Mary. Docken went on to secure four straight wins taking the 197-pound title over Derrick Hawkins in a 7-4 decision.

Lowman, competing unattached, started with a first-round bye, then went on to win with a pin at the 1:43 mark over Tim Stephens of Northwestern, followed by a 7-0 decision over Eric Draper of Morningside College. Lowman secured a win with a 3-0 decision over Jonah Westbury of U-Mary to put him in the semifinal match.

Lowman pinned DJ McIntyre of Concordia University at the 4:32 mark to put him in the 285-pound title match where he faced Dean Broghammer of Grand View College, winning with a 4-3 decision.

Jacob Anderson, competing unattached, pinned Jamsion Baird of Wayne State at 2:15, followed by four straight wins, before dropping in an 11-10 decision over Elijah Sullivan of Grand View College to take second-place in the 149-pound weight class.

Colin Ayers, competing unattached had a first-round bye before taking on John Gioffredi from Grand View College winning with a 8-5 decision, followed by a 3-2 decision over Cortez Arredondo of Southwest Minnesota State. Ayers continued to use his momentum winning a 6-4 decision over Jacob Caskey from Briar Cliff University, and a 6-2 decision over Foster Bunce of Concordia University. Ayers continued on his streak, winning four straight bouts to head into the Championship match against teammate Mason Brownlee.

Brownlee started his day off with a pin at 3:31 over Evan Lemieux, following five straight bouts to head into the Championship match.

Colin Ayers (141 pounds, unattached) and Mason Brownlee (141 pounds, unattached) were named co-champions for meeting in the championship bout.

Also, Bradyn Neises (165 pounds, unattached) and Tim Weber (165 pounds) went perfect on the day, finishing as co-champions.

The Vikings return to action Nov. 22 at the Holiday Inn Open in Kearney, Neb.
