SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana University wrestling team officially opened the 2015-16 season on Wednesday afternoon, holding its first practice of the season.
Head coach Jason Reitmeier, now in his 13th season as the Vikings head coach, welcomes 36 wrestlers for the upcoming season. The Vikings return 27 from last year’s team that finished 18-5, including 7-1 in the NSIC.
Augustana returns two national qualifiers from last season, including national runner-up at 125 pounds, TJ North. For the second straight season, North earned All-America honors with a second-place finish at the national championship. He finished the 2014-15 season with a record of 26-4, including 22-1 against Division II opponents, with his only loss coming in the national championship bout.
Michael Lowman qualified for the national tournament for the first time in his career last season. Lowman posted a record of 30-13 and placed fourth at the Super Region Three Tournament to punch his ticket to the national championship.
The Vikings open the season on Nov. 1 at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. The team will open the dual portion of its schedule at the South Dakota Showcase Duals at the Sanford Pentagon where they will compete against South Dakota State, Northern State and Dakota Wesleyan.
