Pub Series heroes TJ Unger of HFC and Kara Haas of
Greater Lowell finished in the Place-Show positions at Pub Stop No. 4, the
Foxboro Run Against Diabetes 5K, but it didn’t matter as both retained their
pole positions as the Pub Series goes into snooze mode until Labor Day. (Photos by MickFoto/NERunner)
Providence College senior Brendan Sullivan is a
hometown boy and repped Foxboro well with an overall win in 15:59 with TJ and
teammate Lee Danforth placing 2-3 at
16:12 and 16:30.
Craft Concept Racing’s Bev Antunes duked it out with
Pub Series top Master Joe O’Leary of
SRR with O’Leary edging ahead, but it took an effort as Antunes clocked a
women’s course record 17:03.

With the temp at 73 degrees with bright sun at the 10:00
start it wasn’t a day for PRs despite the flat course. Haas was plenty happy to
place 3rd in 18:17. Past champ Amanda Watters of the BAA once again followed Haas as the pair retain their 1-2
status. Five womenÛÓstarting with HFC’s Sarah Barrett, moved past an absent Holly Madden, who had held the third rung on the Publican
Ladder.
The leaderboard inched up again as Mimi Fallon and David
Wilson fell by the wayside. Otherwise, exempting for slight ripples, the
standings moved along without major changes.
The men’s 70+ division came the closest to a major shift as
leader Joe Noonan almost succumbed to
the heat but made it across the finish line in 4th. With NH’s Denny
LeBlanc absent, Foxboro 70+ winner Rich
Paulson (23:55) made the jump into second
just 2-points behind Noonan in the standings.
Dave Pember placed 2nd
70+ with Iron Joe Drugan just 15
seconds back as both vaulted LeBlanc in the standings. While there are no Pub
residents in the women’s 70+ division (Jan Holmquist is still nursing a
strained calf) Larry Cole
continues to run amuck as the Pub Series’ resident Octogenarian. Congrats
Larry!
Random notes: HFC’s Stephen
Curley, who placed 4th in a PR 16:38
received a cream pie to the face courtesy of teammate Andrew Holmes, something of a club tradition for the day’s most
impressive performance. After his 6th place performance in 16:58, SRR’s Joe
O’LearyÛÓwho had run the mile at the Adrian
Martinez Meet two days earlierÛÓmade it to the historic Lafayette House (buffet,
bar inside, outside deck with live music) for a beer before pointing the car to
the Nutmeg State for a half marathon the following day.
