Chocolate Chip Cookie Creator's MA Home For Sale For $8.9 Million

DUXBURY, MA — Talk about your delicious history. One of the latest houses to hit the Massachusetts real estate market on realtor.com is the former home of Ruth Wakefield, who lived there when she baked the first chocolate chip cookies.

According to her New York Times obituary, Wakefield substituted Nestle semisweet chocolate for baker’s chocolate in a pinch while baking. She called the creations, which she actually created at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Toll House Crunch Cookies. She came to an agreement with Andrew Nestle (yes, that Andrew Nestle) and the rest is can-I-get-a-glass-of-milk history.

Now the home, which sits on more than 3 acres, is for sale on Pill Hill Lane in Duxbury. The asking price is $8.9 million. That’s enough money to buy more than 3 million Toll House cookie dough single packages.

The home, known as the Joshua Thomas House, was built in 1747. It is reported to have connections to the Underground Railroad, according to the Boston Business Journal.
