Astros pitcher Justin Verlander added yet another milestone to his Hall-of-Fame career.
After a foul-tip strikeout of Washington’s Victor Robles in the top of the second inning during Game 2 of the World Series, Verlander passed John Smoltz to become MLB’s all-time postseason strikeout leader.
It was Verlander’s 200th career punchout in the postseason. Smoltz now sits second on the list with 199 while Andy Pettite (183) and Roger Clemens (173) occupy third and fourth, respectively.
Heading into Wednesday’s game, Verlander had appeared in 29 postseason games (28 starts) posting a 14-9 record and a 3.26 ERA. Game 2 marked the 36-year-old’s sixth career start in the World Series. He is 0-4 with a 5.67 ERA in his previous five starts in the Fall Classic.
