USWNT defender Davidson out 10-12 weeks with broken ankle

The promising center back suffered the injury while playing with Stanford on Sept. 9

U.S. women’s national team and Stanford University defender Tierna Davidson will be out 10-12 weeks with a fractured ankle, U.S. Soccer announced Tuesday.

Davidson, who turns 20 on Wednesday, suffered the injury against University of North Carolina on Sept. 9 when she was the victim of a nasty tackle.

The injury will force Davidson out for most, if not all of the remainder of Stanford’s season, and will also see her miss next month’s Concacaf Women’s Championship, which doubles as qualifying for next summer’s World Cup.

Davidson has established herself as one of the USWNT’s fastest-rising players in 2018, earning 12 caps (all starts) and leading the USA in minutes played with 1,049.

The injury likely means the U.S. will go with a starting center back pairing of Abby Dahlkemper and Becky Sauerbrunn when the Concacaf Women’s Championship kicks off next month.

The U.S. faces Mexico, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago in group play, with the top two teams advancing to the semifinal round.
