The Mexico national team’s biggest star won’t take part in the team’s next two friendly matches because of an injury, the Mexican federation announced Sunday.
PSV winger Hirving Lozano was set to take part in El Tri’s pair of games against Argentina this month, but pulled out of the squad as the FIFA window opened because of discomfort in his right hamstring.
“Club PSV reports that Hirving Lozano is suffering from a muscle spasm in his the right hamstring, which impedes him from attending this call-up,” a FMF statement read.
Lozano’s absence from the national team is unlikely to last long. He played all 90 minutes of PSV’s 4-1 victory Saturday over De Graafschap.
There will not be a replacement called to take Lozano’s place. Earlier in the week, Santos Laguna defender Jesus Angulo had to pull out of the squad after breaking his hand in training. The 20-year-old was replaced by Cruz Azul defender Julio “Cata”Dominguez, who is 31.
Mexico interim manager Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti has overseen the team since Juan Carlos Osorio’s departure after the World Cup and largely tried to institute a youth movement. Lozano, who is just 23 but has become Mexico’s most important player, has been a big part of that.
While other players who played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia have taken extended absences, Lozano has been part of the call-ups for both September and October friendly matches. He played in a September match against Uruguay before returning to Eindhoven to prepare for a Champions League match against Barcelona and faced Chile in the October window.
Lozano also is key for his Eredivisie side, where he’s started in all 12 league games contested so far, scoring eight goals and adding four assists. He’s also started all six Champions League matches the Lightbulbs have played, adding a goal and assists in those contests.
His performances have earned links with some of the largest clubs in the world, including Champions League rival Barcelona and Premier League giant Manchester United, and Lozano recently declared his dream to play in the English top-flight.
Lozano’s PSV teammate Erick Gutierrez still will take part in the friendly matches, with the first game set to take place Friday in Cordoba and the second scheduled for November 20 in Mendoza.
