Karmichael Hunt has made a brief appearance in Brisbane Magistrates Court, with his matter adjourned until February 19.
Hunt was allegedly found with an illegal substance during a night out in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley on December 30 and was subsequently charged with two counts of drug possession and one count of contravening a police direction.
Court documents revealed Hunt was reportedly found with cocaine and Xanax, which is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.
The contravening police direction charge relates to Hunt forgetting to provide a fingerprint on at Fortitude Valley police station on January 5.
While the 31-year-old offered no comment, his lawyer, Adam Magill, told the court police had provided him with new information in relation to the case and asked for an adjournment. That was granted and Hunt will now be due to re-appear on February 19.
That’s four days before the Reds take on the Rebels in their Super Rugby opener – putting his immediate playing future in serious doubt.
Rugby Australia confirmed in a statement that Hunt would not take part at training until his next day in court.
“With today’s decision by the Brisbane Magistrate’s Court to adjourn Karmichael Hunt’s case for three-weeks, Rugby Australia and the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) have confirmed Hunt’s voluntary stand-down will continue through to the next scheduled court hearing on February 19,” it read.
“Rugby Australia and the QRU will provide further comment at the appropriate time.”
