Texans releasing veteran cornerback Aaron Colvin, reports say | Sporting News

The Texans are moving on from a veteran defensive back.

Houston is releasing cornerback Aaron Colvin, according to multiple reports, including one from ESPN. The 27-year-old signed a four-year, $34 million contract with the team last offseason and has $7.5 million guaranteed this year, the report notes.

Colvin struggled in his first season with the Texans and was picked apart in the team’s 30-28 Week 1 loss to the Saints. He allowed eight receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown in coverage on nine targets — according to NFL Research — as New Orleans eventually rallied for the win.

“He’s a great player,” Colvin said of Saints quarterback Drew Brees (via the Houston Chronicle). “He did what he needed to do. We didn’t, especially myself. That’s what it is.”

Colvin was originally selected by the Jaguars out of Oklahoma in the fourth round of the 2014 draft. He spent his first four seasons with the team before heading to the Texans.

In a corresponding move, Houston inked cornerback Phillip Gaines to a one-year deal, according to the Chronicle.

The Texans are set to host the Jaguars on Sunday.
