Congratulations — you made it through the first week of the fantasy football season. Unfortunately, most of you hate your team and wish you could redo about 75 percent of your draft. Well, every week you get a chance for a couple do-overs in the form of waiver pickups and free agent adds. There’s always a lot of activity ahead of Week 2, and this year will be no different. Sunday’s games produced a bunch of names to add to the top Week 2 fantasy waiver wire pickups list (Marquise Brown, Josh Ross III, T.J. Hockenson, Jamison Crowder), and more emerged after Monday night’s games (Carlos Hyde, Darren Waller, Ted Ginn). Injury reports for Tevin Coleman, Joe Mixon, and Derrius Guice will also cause Raheem Mostert, Giovani Bernard, and Adrian Peterson to be picked up this week, likely before waivers clear at around 4-5 a.m. ET on Wednesday in Yahoo and ESPN leagues.
You never know when you’re getting a one-week wonder or a season-long contributor on the wire, so if you have a total dud on the end of your bench, go ahead and take a shot on one of these potential breakouts. Our full free agent list is packed with options, including a host of D/ST streamers for Week 2 (which can be found at the end of the list). You can also consult our Week 2 kicker rankings if you think it’s time to make a change…or you just like reading a list of professional football players you might be able to beat up.

If you have a top waiver claim, your best bet is targeting one of the RB fill-ins. If your team is strong and you don’t like the long-term viability of these players, there’s no one who screams “must-add”. There will be injuries every week, so even if you miss this turn on the Ferris wheel, you’ll be able to jump on again soon. But given the likelihood of heavy wire activity this week, you can use a claim and probably not lose too many spots in the pecking order. It’s all about what you need. There are viable short-to-long-term options at every position except QB.

Top fantasy football waiver wire pickups and free agent adds for Week 2
Unless otherwise noted, only players owned in fewer than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues considered.
Carlos Hyde, RB, Texans. I guess we all owe this guy an apology. After calling him washed-up almost all preseason (and the Chiefs seemingly agreeing), Hyde looked positively spry in his Texans debut, rushing 10 times for 83 yards. He had one more carry than Duke Johnson and seems poised to continue to be the rushing leader in the Texans backfield. Hyde averaged 3.3 yards per carry with the Browns and Jaguars last year and is already on his fourth team since the beginning of 2018, so the 29-year-old back isn’t likely to have a monster season. But starting RBs always have fantasy value, especially once bye weeks hit, so don’t be surprised if someone uses a waiver claim on Hyde.
Darren Waller, TE, Raiders. Waller had been gaining steam as a TE sleeper all preseason, and Antonio Brown’s release sent the hype train into overdrive. He responded in a big way in Week 1, catching seven of eight targets for 70 yards. Waller flashed the size and athleticism that could make him “this year’s Jared Cook” — the TE who led the Raiders in targets last year. Given the nature of the position, Waller could easily have TE1 value the rest of the season, so he’s another waivers candidate.
MORE WEEK 2: Full waiver list
Ted Ginn Jr., WR, Saints. Most fantasy football owners have had Ginn on their team at one point, and we might be in for more of the same this year. Whether he has staying power remains to be seen, but he stepped up as New Orleans’ No. 2 receiver on Monday night, catching all seven of his targets for 101 yards. Ginn’s upside is capped by his likely lack of touchdowns, but if he can continue to get consistent targets, he’ll have value in that offense. There’s no need to use a claim on him, but Ginn is at least worth a free agent add.
WEEK 2 PPR RANKINGS: Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end
Adrian Peterson, RB, Redskins. Fantasy owners abandoned ship quickly with Peterson, who was a healthy scratch in Week 1, but a Derrius Guice knee injury suddenly has him back in fantasy consideration. Peterson is owned in just 39 percent of Yahoo leagues, so there’s a good chance he’s out there in your league. It’s unclear how long Guice will be out, but Peterson proved last year he can be a fantasy asset when starting. You’ll need to burn a claim to get him, but it makes sense to do it.
Raheem Mostert, RB, 49ers. Like Peterson, Mostert will get the opportunity to take advantage of an injury to a starter. Tevin Coleman’s high ankle sprain will keep him out at least a couple games, so Mostert, who was getting touches even when Coleman was healthy in Week 1, will move into a full-on timeshare with Matt Breida. It’s easy to assume Breida will get the bulk of the touches, but given his injury history, Mostern could easily find himself getting 10-15 touches for the foreseeable future. Because of Breida’s presence, you can probably wait to get Mostert in free agency, but he’s a sneaky waivers guy if you’re already burning claims.
