Wimbledon 2019: 7 crazy facts from historic Novak Djokovic-Roger Federer match | Sporting News

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic put on quite a show during the Wimbledon final Sunday in a match that set a number of records.

Sunday’s marathon battle won’t be forgotten anytime soon as Djokovic edged out Federer in a wild back-and-forth match that marked the longest final in history at the All England Club.

Federer fell short of reaching a ninth title as he lost 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 13-12 (7-3) at Centre Court. It was a match that became the first Wimbledon final to go to a tie-break at 12-12 in the decider before Djokovic earned his fifth championship.

Here are seven crazy stats from Djokovic’s win:

Sunday’s match is the longest final in Wimbledon history as the final ended after four hours and 55 minutes. It featured 68 games, 422 points (218 for Federer and 204 for Djokovic) and 35 aces.

Djokovic’s win marked his 16th major title, and his fifth Wimbledon title. He’s now 3-0 against Federer in Wimbledon finals.

The Djokovic-Federer match marked the first time a men’s Grand Slam final has gone 6-6 in the fifth set since 2009 Wimbledon. That was when Federer outlasted Andy Roddick 16-14 in the fifth set.

A Wimbledon final hasn’t gone five sets since 2014, which was when No. 1 seed Djokovic defeated No. 4 seed Federer.

Sunday’s final was the 13th time at Wimbledon that Djokovic has won the first set and then dropped the second.

With Djokovic’s two match points saves allowing him to reach the fifth-set tiebreaker, he became the first man since 1948 to save championship points in the final and go on to win.
