Mets' Vargas threatens, charges at reporter after loss | Sporting News

The Mets’ season continued to move in the wrong direction Sunday.

New York dropped to 37-41 after it blew a late lead and fell to the Cubs, 5-3, at Wrigley Field. But, things went from bad to worse after the game.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway cursed out a reporter following the loss and requested he leave the locker room, according to multiple reports.

New York starter Jason Vargas then stared down the same reporter and words were exchanged. He also said he’d “knock him out,” according to Yahoo Sports. No punches were thrown, but Vargas “charged” at the reporter and had to be restrained by Carlos Gomez and Noah Syndergaard.

The reporter reportedly left the locker room shortly after.

Vargas, 36, signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Mets in February 2018. He holds a 3-3 record with a 3.75 ERA in 13 appearances this season.

Vargas has also pitched for the Marlins, Angels, Mariners and Royals over his 14-year career.

Callaway is in his second season with the Mets, as well.

New York will begin a four-game series Monday against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
