Jimmy Gopperth to play on into his 40s after joining new club

Former Hurricanes and Wasps fly-half Jimmy Gopperth has found a new club after signing with Pro D2 side Provence as his incredible career continues.

The 39-year-old, who has also played for Wellington, North Harbour, the Blues, Newcastle, Leinster and Leicester, isn’t hanging up his boots just yet.

His deal at the club that plays in the second tier of French rugby will see him run out as a 40 year-old, as he reaches that milestone later this month.

Moves on from Leicester Tigers

Gopperth left Leicester Tigers at the end of the season and the New Zealand fly-half or centre will be a welcome addition to the exciting Pro D2 league.

The New Plymouth-born back impressed at the Hurricanes in his early career before moving to Super Rugby rivals the Blues in 2009 for just one season.

He then decided to take up an offer in the Premiership at Newcastle Falcons where he ran out 113 times, replacing the outgoing legend Jonny Wilkinson.

Leinster then came calling in 2013 where he stayed until 2015 before he moved to Wasps, a club he played his most matches for, racking up 156 outings.

He would end his time in England for Leicester Tigers in a one-season stint in 2022/23 and has now taken up the offer to play for Provence in France.

Stade Francais release 13

Gopperth will be joined at Provence by Stade Francais pair Arthur Coville and Sione Tui, who are two of 13 playing departures from the Top 14 outfit.

Also leaving the French giants will be Alex Arrate, Theo Dachary, Harry Glover, James Hall, Vincent Koch, Marcos Kremer, Paolo Odogwu, Morgan Parra, Nemo Roelofse, Sitaleki Timani and Telusa Veainu, the club announced in updates on Monday afternoon.

Coaching pair Gonzalo Quesada and Laurent Sempere will also exit the club, with Stade Francais having been knocked out of the Top 14 last Saturday.
