Post their emphatic triumph over Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans (GT) to seal the IPL 2023 final berth, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed that his mindset wasn’t as strong last season as it was this year.
After the game, Gaikwad told teammate Deepak Chahar that he believes a solid start is crucial for the team to advance in the competition.
“My mindset last year wasn’t too good either and neither was the team’s. I thought the opening start is very important for the team to go ahead,”he said.
“Last year I thought that next year I’d give it my best in all of my matches and if I get momentum after that I will continue with it,” he added.

Gaikwad then congratulated Chahar on his successful IPL 2023 stint and said that the side missed his services last season.
“Congrats to you…you took a superb catch, you made a strong comeback from your injury. You scalped wickets in powerplay in every match, we were missing that last year and in the first few games too.”
To which, Chahar replied and said, “I’m very happy to contribute. As a player you want that the franchise that has shown effort for you, gave you lots of money so you think of repaying them. So I’m happy.”
Earlier, during the post-match conference, the 26-year-old attributed Chennai Super Kings’ success to their pre-season camp and praised the team management for making the players feel secured and clearly stating their roles.
“It started from last year when we didn’t qualify for playoffs. Obviously, the management got something to work on and there were things which we needed to improve and put an effort on, or add someone,” he said.
“This year, right from the first game, I think we were clinical and sure about who is going to play and who is not going to play and what will be our probable 12 or 13 or 15.”
“I think right from the first game everyone knew about their roles. When the Sri Lankans came late — Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana — I think they were up to the mark even from the first game,” he added.
