Kylian Mbappé – what on earth is going on?

This evening, a series of reports emerged from France’s most reputable outlets announcing that an agreement had been reached between AS Monaco and PSG for Kylian Mbappé.

Seems simple enough. Problem? They are all announcing something different.

France Info reported this afternoon of a €180m agreement between the two clubs.

Next was RMC’s Mohamed Bouhafsi, renowned king of transfer reporting, who announced that a €180m agreement had been reached between the two clubs, seemingly indicating that a straight transfer would occur immediately.

Then followed L’Équipe with an entirely different story: they claim that a deal has been reached for a loan with option to buy agreement worth €180m, including bonuses, with the player undergoing a medical before lunchtime tomorrow. Seemingly a bizarre decision from L’ASM, who have the player under contract until 2019, and are therefore not totally obliged to let him go this month, let alone for basically nothing for a year, depending on what thepayment structure is of this supposed loan. The reason for this tact from PSG, of an optional buy-out clause, is if in case they cannot afford to buy the player next summer owing to FFP regulations. Smart, if they get away with it.

TF1 claim that the deal is yet again different: that this is a loan agreement with an obligation to buy, and that the fee is €145m plus €35m in bonuses.

One thing is clear, in whatever package this comes, Kylian Mbappé is going to become the second most expensive player in the history of football for an eventual amount of €180m.

But never, since the conception of Get French Football News in 2013, have we seen France’s most reliable outlets so seemingly confused and different in terms of opinion on the exact nature of this deal.

One thing is abundantly clear: this deal does not include Fabinho, but PSG still have designs on the player and may be negotiating separately for his arrival.

Kylian Mbappé to PSG: yes, but in what form exactly? We’ll know in the coming hours…
