Interview | Jerôme Rothen: “Paul Mitchell will have to be more inspired than he was last summer.”

Speaking with GFFN journalist Luke Entwistle, former AS Monaco winger Jerôme Rothen spoke about AS Monaco’s chances in the Champions League play-offs as well as the recruitment strategy of the club.

Questioned on last year’s defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk in the playoff rounds of the Champions League, Rothen responded, “Over the course of the two legs in the play-off against Shakhtar Donetsk last season, they should have gone through. If they had their season may have gone differently, and maybe their manager would have stayed. They have all the ingredients to make it through the playoffs. I can’t see them getting knocked out by a team like Shakhtar two years in a row. There are championships that we’re better than. The third-placed Ligue 1 team should do better than being rivaled by teams from minor championships. So there will be increased pressure on the shoulders of the players from the month of August, but’s that what it means to be playing at the highest level.”

The Rothen s’enflamme host then reflected on the recruitment at the club. “What is certain is that the dark moment of last summer’s transfer market was the recruitment in terms of players that arrived at the club. We were very disappointed in a lot of players. The Sporting Director will have to be more inspired than he was in last summer’s window. It was better with Vanderson, so let’s hope that there will be two or three more golden finds like that so that Monaco can qualify for the Champions League and target the top of Ligue 1 as well,” he said.
