The former Roma manager has been a free agent since leaving the Giallorossi at the end of last season, as his compatriot José Mourinho took over.
Lille are looking to bring in a new manager after Gourvennec oversaw a disappointing title defence and a 10th place finish in the league, a far cry from their performances under Christophe Galtier in 2020/21.
Fonseca has been offered a two-year deal to take over, with talks now at an advanced stage following on from initial reports a few days ago of contact being made between the two parties.
The coach is said to be tempted by the prospect of managing in Ligue 1, and looks set to replace the outgoing Gourvennec, who will not see out his deal which expires at the end of next season. Former Troyes manager Laurent Batlles had also been linked to the job with Les Dogues, before he joined his former club Saint-Étienne in Ligue 2.
Before his spell at Roma, the 49-year-old had been in charge of Shakhtar Donetsk, with the former centre-back also managing in his home country in spells at Porto, Braga and Paços de Ferreira.
